Aid and comfort...!

In the November 21st issue of the Montreal Gazette, Fu-Sun Chu, minister of the Nationalist Chinese Embasy in Ottawa, is reported to have stated that more than 25,000,000 persons have been killed by the Chinese Communists since 1949 in order to institute "reforms" in Red China. Another 30,000,000 have been herded into labor camps. Among those killed were more than 5,000,000 land owners and village leaders. Another 4,000,000 people have fled the Chinese mainland since the Communists took over power.

There is a strong move on foot in the Western world to have the Red government of China recognized by the Western governments and admitted to the United Nations. Part of the propaganda to have such a proposal realized is the continuous flow of TV programs, radio broadcasts and magazine articles which purpose to demonstrate the amazing technological advances being made by the Chinese Communists in industry and agriculture. Side by side with this are the glowing pictures painted of the blossoming Chinese educational system which is turning out technicians and engineers at a fantastic rate. The people are shown as happy, contented and enthusiastically behind the government of their Red masters. Our own Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has donated considerable TV time to such programs or recent months. On the magazine front we might quote Saturday Night, "Canada's Magazine of Business and Contemporary Affairs" (by its own admission): "The first thing that the West as a whole must do is to persuade the Americans to recognize Red China." (October 29th). It terms the North American view about Red China as "foolish". (November 26th). The assertion is that since the government of Communist Mao controls the vast mass of the Chinese (and not the Formosan regime) it should be recognized by the other governments and given a seat in the United Nations.

It is difficult to understand how any voice in the West, which is cognizant of all the Red government stands for mass murder on a gigantic scale, the complete repression of all liberty and independence with the herding of the people like cattle, and its avowed intention to subdue the rest of the world to the Hammer and Sickle by violence - can possibly wish to extend aid and comfort to such a government by fighting for official recognition for it on the part of governments whose principles are diametrically opposed to those of the Red China dictators.

We have already recognized the Red government of Russia. It has an important seat in the United Nations. What particular advantages have the democratic governments and their peoples derived from such recognition? None. On the contrary, the Russian dictators have been put in a position where they could expound their doctrines and spread their propaganda with the greatest advantage to their side. Today Khrushchev is riding high and mighty over the other governments. The West either trembles in fear or breaths in grateful relief depending upon how Mr. Khrushchev decides to act from day to day.

To recognize Red China would be to grant to it the same advantages over democracy which have accrued to Russia through its recognition by the Western states. And those who so stubbornly fight to have such recognition ac corded to this government of monsters are guilty of giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

To recognize Red China would be to betray all the Asian and Eastern peoples who make some attempt at resisting Communists domination because they believe they have the backing of the West. It would be to hand over the Chi- nese government in Formosa to the Reds (For Mao will not accept recognition unless the Formosa government is disowned). This would be to wipe out the one base from which the West can hope someday to start the counter-offensive against the tyranny which today grips the Chinese people and threatens all Asia and ultimately the world.

To recognize Red China is quite simply to betray democracy!
