Castro, the guest

The following is an excerpt from the Wall Street Journal as quoted in the Sault Daily Star of September 27th, 1960. It refers to the trip to New York for the recent United Nations session, of the Cuban swashbuckler.

For the trip, Castro had whistled up a mob of 80 bearded bullyboys, laden with 500 pieces of luggage and crates of biscuits, beans and peanuts the whole entourage moving in a cloud of black stogie smoke. Finally, at the frantic behest of the State Department, the Hotel Shelburne opened its doors to Castro's travelling circus. Installed in 20 suites, the Cubans promptly bivouacked as they would in the mountains back home. In an impromptu commissary on the third floor, they plucked and cooked chickens and broke out the beans and biscuits. Cheeseburgers from local beaneries were run up to Castro's suite in brown paper bags. Swarms of hairy "aides" overran the Shelburne's swank lobby. When the innkeeper, an unwilling host to begin with, asked for a guarantee against damages, Fidel threw a tantrum and refused. Screaming against "unacceptable cash demands", Castro and Company packed their bags, their unpacked chickens, their peanuts and beans, and stalked off to U.N. headquarters."

This is the leader and representative of the proud Cuban people!
